Research

In the initial research phase I synthesized existing theoretical frameworks to create a conceptual framework that structured and operationalized the investigation.

The Internet of Practices framework posits that sensors integrated into social practices act on how people perceive their own social organizations. Sensing technology modifies our perception, which in turn, alters the way we interact with the technology. Together, sensors and social practices become co-producers of habitus: the permanent internalization of the social order in the human body. Each study explores part of the process of interaction: engagement, attunement, and expansion.

After benchmarking current sensing infrastructure I conducted an Interview with a local birding expert who frequently leads birdwalks for the general public with varying levels of knowledge and awarenesss. I utilized insights from our interview to develop personas to discover and ground design opportunities.

Journey Map

In the initial research phase our team used a matrix to generate ideas toward how different machine learning attributes and features could meet the varied needs of patients. After benchmarking current machine learning healthcare tools we conducted interviews with patients with Crohn’s disease and the parent of a patient with Crohn’s to identify points of frustration and opportunity in their current experience.

Based on our interviews, we developed personas and a corresponding user journey to ground our design explorations moving forward.

Our personas Rose and Lara show the contrast between a newly diagnosed patient with Crohn’s and a long-term patient.
